All about Australian Women
She is one of Australia’s best-loved comedians and social commentators and she is hitting back this week with her coverage of the first election debate. Corinne Grant, famous for providing the Australian public with endless laughs on Good News Week, Rove Live, The Glasshouse, Spicks and Specks and… well the list goes on, is now also a weekly contributor to the online women’s mag The Hoopla. Grant’s reflections this week highlight the ridiculous flaws in Rudd and Abbots arguments over the (non-existent) carbon tax, boat people and killer robot sharks. For the low down on why we should be angry about this debate, check out her article here.
Is the man in your life (BF, husband, father, BFF) constantly on your back about those darn “chick-flicks” you insist on watching? Or maybe you’re just fed up with watching an all male cast blow up the bad guys and seduce ladies whose only character development involves wearing a slinky dress. Well, in response to some abominable statistics showing that only 1% of the characters in last year’s top 100 grossing films were female and only 9% of directors of last year’s top 250 grossing films were women, the gals in Hollywood have hit back with Austenland. A romantic comedy written by a woman, directed by a woman, produced by a woman and about many women, Austenland is guaranteed to be controversial. Promising a ‘women only’ premier some men are feeling pretty left out, but the creators have defended their decision simply by saying “it’s not for you. Don’t see it. Can’t come”. Read all about the controversy here.
Returning to work after having a child can be difficult and studies are now proving that it isn’t just because of the extra strain on your time, your mind and your body. After questioning over 2000 women who returned to work post-baby, onepoll.com found that the large majority faced negative attitudes and stagnation in their career progress even if they were working harder than ever. However, these UK based results might look dire, but Canada reports much better news for working mums, with four-fifths of women with children under 16 in stable work. Read the details here and keep Canada in mind next time a colleague returns from maternity leave.
We all need a good role model to look up to so while searching for some inspiration this week we came across this little article on Esther Koplowitz. Koplowitz is the proud owner and Chairwoman of the FCC – a construction company working across 50 countries world wide. She also leads the Esther Koplowitz Foundation, working to provide healthcare and education and a range of social services to people in need in Spain. Ay caramba, she is amazing!
It turns out that writing runs in the family. The great-niece of Virginia Woolf has released a book and it is creating quite a buzz. If you’re yet to hear about it, brace your self; it’s a doozy. After over a decade suffering anorexia, Emma Woolf confronted her health problems after deciding she wanted children. Woolf’s book, The Ministry of Thin, takes you on her journey of suffering and recovery, revealing the author’s discovery that few, if any women actually have a healthy body image and diet.
