Q & A with Karan White

What’s the story behind your business?

We recognised that we had complimentary skill sets that would enable us to work together to deliver legal services in a way that had rarely (if ever) been seen before. Pod Legal’s commitment to innovation across knowledge sharing, cost and time management, client service delivery and employee engagement led to the firm being recognised on the LexisNexis | Janders Dean Legal Innovation Index as a Top 10 Law Firm in Australia and New Zealand.

What was your first job?

Volunteer at the RSPCA.

When you decided to start your own business, what was your big “why”?

The legal industry needed to be disrupted to deliver value for money solutions to clients on a fixed fee basis. We also added in a splash of good humour, personality and expertise to the ‘why’.

What have you had to give up?

Surplus free time.

Your proudest achievement to date?

Although I have been the recipient of a number of Awards, my most significant professional achievements are being selected by CBA Women In Focus as one of ten Australian women to participate in a business and study tour of Silicon Valley and Pod Legal being recognised as a leading law firm. Personally: meeting and marrying my business partner and life partner, Jamie. He is the love of my life and my constant inspiration.

What are some of the most exciting projects you’ve worked on?

Due to the nature of our work and clients I can’t reveal the most exciting projects but I can’t deny I don’t get a thrill when driving around any city in Australia and seeing our clients on billboards, their ads on TV or in publications. We work with multiple state Governments, large corporates, SMEs and start ups with the same level of commitment and enthusiasm. We have worked to see our clients successfully commercialised in 42+ countries, which is pretty exciting too!

What would you tell your younger self not to do?

Worry. Everything happens for a reason. Go with it.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Be yourself – from a chick who I met in a coffee queue and formed a friendship with over our love for coffee and the fact we both snort-laugh. It turned out she was a Judge. I figured if she can snort-laugh and be herself, why can’t I?

What’s next for you and your business?

Keep on delivering the ‘Pod Experience’ to our clients and community. It’s what we do.
